Giro d’Italia 2025: A Historic Start in Albania
In May 2025, Albania made history by hosting the Grande Partenza of the Giro d’Italia for the first time. Over three exhilarating days, the world’s top cyclists raced through our country’s stunning landscapes, from coastal cities to mountainous terrains. As a passionate cyclist and founder of Albania by Bike, I had the privilege of witnessing and capturing this monumental event firsthand.
Stage 1: Durrës to Tirana (May 9)
The Giro kicked off with a 160 km hilly stage starting from the port city of Durrës and culminating in the capital, Tirana. Riders faced approximately 1,800 meters of climbing, navigating through scenic routes that showcased Albania’s diverse topography.
Stage 2: Tirana Individual Time Trial (May 10)
The second day featured a 13.7 km individual time trial set entirely within Tirana. Cyclists raced against the clock, weaving through the city’s vibrant streets and landmarks, offering spectators a thrilling display of speed and strategy.
Stage 3: Vlorë Circuit (May 11)
The final Albanian stage was a 160 km loop around the coastal city of Vlorë. This route included challenging climbs, notably the Llogara Pass, a 10.7 km ascent with an average gradient of 7.4%, testing the riders’ endurance and climbing prowess.
Capturing the Moments
Being present at each stage allowed me to capture the essence of the event through photographs and videos. From the adrenaline-pumping sprints to the camaraderie among fans, the atmosphere was electric. These moments not only highlight the race but also the beauty and hospitality of Albania.
